Shelling Ukraine on US Independence Day: Will There Be Consequences for Putin

Main points

  • Russia attacked Kyiv with missiles and Shaheds on the night of July 4, when the United States was celebrating Independence Day.
  • Political scientist Igor Chalenko believes that pressure on the Kremlin in the form of sanctions is still under consideration, but the US may pass a bill on them.
  • At the same time, Putin is monitoring the situation in the United States, in particular the lifting of sanctions against Rosoboronexport and Rosatom.

On the night of July 4, Russia attacked the capital with missiles and “Shaheds”, on the same day the US celebrated its independence. President Donald Trump's patience may soon really snap.

However, this may be in the form of words. This opinion was expressed to 24 Channel by political scientist, head of the Center for Analysis and Strategies Igor Chalenko, noting that the most important instrument of pressure on the Kremlin, that is, sanctions, are still on the verge of consideration.

On the consequences for Putin

The political scientist suggested that the world is now at a certain point of bifurcation in the views of the US president, when he can tell Lindsey Graham that it is time to pass a bill on sanctions against Russia.

At the same time, we should not forget that the Russian dictator is also monitoring the situation in America. After all, against the backdrop of statements about increasing specific sanctions pressure, we see the lifting of sanctions from Rosoboronexport in the Syrian package, the lifting of sanctions from the construction of a nuclear power plant in Hungary with the participation of Rosatom.

That is, Putin today has arguments to believe in Trump's inability to exert truly qualitative new pressure. At the same time, we see the Iranian case, where Trump is behaving quite proactively, he explained.

Incidentally, on July 5, Trump himself said that he was being tougher with Russia than with Iran. He said that “probably Putin wants to go all the way and just keep killing people” after a phone call with the dictator.
