One of Haiti's police unions has appealed to all police officers in the capital with access to vehicles and weapons to help regain control of the prison. At least four people are now known to have died due to the shooting on the street.
Former policeman Jimmy Cherezier became the leader of the gang. He is now calling for the detention of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry “to dismiss the country.” The aggravation in the country began while Henri was on a visit to Kenya – he is trying to negotiate the help of foreign armed forces to fight gangs.
“We are all united, the armed groups in provincial towns and the armed groups in the capital,” said an ex-police officer believed to be involved in several massacres in Port-au-Prince.
Ariel Henry came to power after the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. He previously said he would leave office in February 2024, but said the day before that elections would be delayed until the end of August 2025.
