Sid Weier fell while training indoors. The boy landed with a strong impact, and an ambulance arrived on the scene.
He was taken to a local hospital in Echt, but was then quickly airlifted to another facility. In the hospital in Maastricht, Sid underwent four operations.
In total, he spent two weeks in the hospital. Shortly after the accident, which occurred in Swalmen, Limburg, on December 22, the family learned that Sid's injuries were very serious.
On January 5th, the family released a statement confirming that the little champion had passed away.
The statement read: “Last Monday, there was a small ray of hope in Sid's situation. Over the course of the week, that ray of hope turned into the darkest scenario and turned into an unfair fight that Sid could not win. Sid fought like a lion. We – Reynold and Rianna, Mac and Loek – fought him until the last minute with everything we had, the doctors and nurses did everything they could. Sid passed away this afternoon in the presence of his family.”
Sid's cousin, Collin Weier, also shared emotional words on social media. Collin, a professional motorcycle racer, said: “You fought hard against everything that happened, but you couldn't win that hard and tough battle. You gave me even more motivation to fight as hard as you did. I love you, Sid.”
Collin finished third in the Moto3 World Road Racing Championship this year. Last year, Sid became the Dutch champion in the Junior A minibike class.
