The airline Air France-KLM expects an agreement on further state aid shortly after a billion-dollar loss in the 2020 corona year.

“It's a matter of weeks, not months,” said CFO Frederic Gagey on the occasion of the presentation of the annual figures on Thursday in Paris. The governments of France and the Netherlands are currently talking to the EU Commission about further financial injections.

Because the tightened travel restrictions in the wake of the pandemic keep Air France-KLM under control. CEO Benjamin Smith therefore did not want to come up with any business forecast for the current year.

In the final quarter of 2020, Air France-KLM was once again deep in the red. For the past year, the bottom line was a loss of 7.1 billion euros after a profit of 290 million a year earlier.

In addition, Air France-KLM is constantly losing money. Between the end of September and the end of December, liquid assets and credit lines shrank from EUR 12.4 billion to EUR 9.8 billion. France and the Netherlands had already saved Air France and KLM from collapse with billions in aid last year.

The corporate management continues to assess the short-term outlook as bleak. The loss before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) in the months of January to March is likely to be even higher than in the fourth quarter of 2020. The minus for this key figure was 407 million euros.
