A lawyer reported on one of her first advocacy cases in the United States. And it was crowned with success.
Ukrainian lawyer Veronika Velch, the wife of director and military man Oleg Sentsov, played a role in the large-scale prisoner exchange on August 1 between Russia and the United States.
The lawyer herself reported this on her Facebook page.
Velch, as a lawyer, took part in the case of the release of Paul Whelan, accused of espionage, from Russian prison in the United States.
“A story that can finally be told. Paul Whelan. He spent 2,043 days in a Russian prison due to espionage charges. “We started working with his twin brother, sister, and renowned attorney Ryan Fahey almost from the very moment of Paul's arrest,” the lawyer said in a statement.
She recalled the first meeting in March 2019 at the State Department, the US National Security Council, led by now former US National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Congress.
Read the main news of the day:
“Then everyone was inclined to think (and actively inclined us to think) that it was not worth raising the “price” … and it quickly became clear that without publicity – nowhere. That’s why we fought non-stop for the presence of his (Whelan’s – ed.) name on all pages. The next step was the battle to have Paul declared “wrongfully detained”, and then several years of advocacy for his release“, Welch wrote.
The lawyer added that this was one of her first advocacy cases in the US.
“And now I am infinitely happy that the combination of difficult efforts was crowned with success”, Welch summed up.
Recall that on August 1, the US and Russia conducted a large-scale prisoner exchange. A total of 26 people were exchanged, of which 10 returned to the Russian Federation, and 10 to Western countries 16.
