Sentiment in the euro zone is recovering

by alex

However, index for the service sector remains at a low level

Economic sentiment in the eurozone brightened in December despite the restrictions caused by the fight against the second wave of the corona pandemic. The Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) rose by 2.7 points to 90.4 points, according to the European Commission. Economists had expected an improvement, but only assumed 89.8 points. Developments in the EU as a whole were similar.

The decline in the sentiment indicator in November was therefore a one-off setback for the past few months. In the months from May to October, economic sentiment had recovered from the historic slump in April.

The index value for the service sector, which is particularly suffering from the new corona restrictions, remained at a low level. For the retail sector, the value for December also continued to decline, while it improved noticeably for the industrial sector.
