US senators called on the head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, to “do more” to ensure the safety of fellow citizens in Ukraine. This is stated in the corresponding appeal, RIA Novosti reports.

“Closing the embassy and directing Americans to air flights or evacuation by land is far from being in line with the obligations that this government has to its citizens,” the politicians said in a statement.

The senators also criticized the US administration for its decision to temporarily close the US embassy in Kiev, as well as to suspend consular services while Americans are scattered across the country “about the size of Texas”.

The US authorities decided to temporarily relocate their embassy in Ukraine on February 14. As Blinken explained, the reason was the “dramatic acceleration of the build-up of Russian forces” on the border with Ukraine. At the same time, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called the relocation of embassies to Western Ukraine a big mistake.
