Searching for an approach to Russia from the backyard: why Kellogg is going to Lukashenko

Key points

  • Keith Kellogg is planning a visit to Belarus to meet with Alexander Lukashenko, seeing this as an opportunity to launch a dialogue to end the Russian-Ukrainian war.
  • Maxim Nesvitailov believes that the visit is an attempt by the Donald Trump administration to continue a friendly dialogue with the Kremlin, which is beneficial to Moscow.

Keith Kellogg, Donald Trump's special envoy, is likely planning a visit to Belarus to meet with Alexander Lukashenko. However, there is no need to look for any hidden subtext here.

Political scientist and international expert Maxim Nesvitaylov expressed this opinion to Channel 24, noting that this is a direct attempt to continue a friendly dialogue with the Kremlin. Moscow benefits from this, so it will continue to attack Ukraine.

Why is Kellogg going to Lukashenko?

In informal conversations, Kellogg called the visit an opportunity to launch a dialogue on ending the Russian-Ukrainian war. However, according to the political scientist, such justifications are wild, because the negotiations have been going on for almost 3 months (in Riyadh and Istanbul).

There is no point in looking for logical solutions and diplomatic cunning in the actions of the Donald Trump administration. This is essentially a search for an approach to Russia from the backyard .

After all, Trump is acting clearly and consistently – he wants to reach an agreement with Russia and put pressure on Ukraine. This is the maximum playing into Moscow’s hands, he emphasized.

At the same time, Putin understands that he can twist the US as he pleases. He is massively shelling Ukraine and knows that Washington will not do anything for it.

Incidentally, in the meantime, the head of the Center for Public Analysis, Valery Klochok, suggested that Kellogg could use Lukashenko to find out whether Vladimir Putin intends to continue negotiations and make concessions. After all, Lukashenko and the Belarusian dictator are very close and see each other quite often.
