The Scottish government has decided to remove the word “mother” from official documentation regarding maternity laws. Now, in the laws and documents regulating various aspects of motherhood in this country, instead of the word “mother”, the expressions “spouse”, “partner”, “pregnant woman”, “person who gave birth to a child” and the like will be used. Such terms will also be used in documentation related to the registration of maternity leave.
The initiative was proposed by the Stonewall organization, writes the Daily Mail. It is one of the largest LGBT rights organizations in Europe. Stonewall has consistently advocated the removal of gender-sensitive words and the use of gender-neutral pronouns from official documents.
It is reported that not all LGBT organizations accepted the innovation with enthusiasm, some criticized the decision of the Scottish civil service to abandon the word “mother” in documents.
