Scientists warn that alcohol consumption can cause cancer
Scientists have recorded a link between alcohol consumption and the development of oncology, according to The Lancet Oncology .
According to experts, 740 thousand new cases of cancer recorded last year are directly related to alcohol consumption. This is about 4% of all cancer diagnosed in the world per year.
It is known that alcohol can provoke DNA damage by increasing the production of harmful chemicals in the body. In addition, drinking alcohol triggers the release of hormones that contribute to the development of cancer.
Scientists from seven countries studied data on alcohol consumption per person in different countries in 2010 and compared it with the number of cancers that were detected in 2020. The experts noted that ten years is the period it takes for alcohol to influence the development of cancer.
Experts managed to establish that excessive alcohol consumption has the greatest impact on the development of cancer. However, even moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages led to more than 103 thousand diseases in 2020. The largest number is cancer of the esophagus, larynx, oral cavity, pharynx, colon and rectum, liver and breast.
The study also showed that Eastern Asia, Central and Eastern Europe are leading in terms of the proportion of alcohol-related oncology cases among regions.
Among the states, the highest rates were recorded in Mongolia (10% of all cancers in 2020), China (6%), India and France (5% each), Brazil and Germany (4% each) and the USA (3%) …
But the results of the work have some clarifications, experts say. This is due to the fact that it is very difficult to reliably assess the impact of alcohol consumption on the incidence of cancer. In particular, the researchers did not take into account the possible impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the overall experience of drinking alcoholic beverages, as well as the influence of other factors that can increase the likelihood of cancer.
Earlier it was reported that lung cancer in the early stages of the disease is asymptomatic. However, there are symptoms that will make it possible to recognize the terminal illness. For example, the main reason for going to the doctor is a cough that does not go away for weeks.
