Scientists in the UK studied data from 6.9 million people in the country and found that being overweight can increase the risk of hospitalization with a severe form of COVID-19 by 5%, according to an article in the scientific journal Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology.

“Even small deviations from the norm noticeably increase the likelihood of getting a severe form of COVID-19, and this risk increases sharply as the BMI increases. Most of all, excess weight affects people under 40 in this way,” said a researcher at the University of Oxford and one of the authors research by Carmen Pirnas.

He noted that people suffering from diabetes, obesity, chronic heart disease, as well as smokers, have the most severe coronavirus infection. Thus, cardiovascular diseases increased the likelihood of death of patients from coronavirus infection by more than four times, and obesity and diabetes increased the chances of resuscitation by about three to five times.

Earlier, the oldest scientific journal Lancet published the results of the third phase of research on the Sputnik V vaccine and noted its high efficiency – 96%.
