Experts from Rockefeller University in New York conducted an experiment on fruit flies, the purpose of which is to find out how isolation from congeners affects appetite and sleep. The reason for the experiment was the sociality of fruit flies, similar to that of humans.
Scientists placed a number of flies in separate “rooms” in which they were alone for 1-3 or 5-7 days. Such terms were not chosen by chance: it was necessary to check whether the duration of isolation depends on the condition of the subjects. As a result, it turned out that if a fly is alone for a long time, it begins to suffer in the same way as a person. Even if the insect has food and it is completely full, nevertheless, loneliness continues to “seize” against the background of an almost complete lack of sleep. The reason is the active production of two hormones: lymostatin and drosulfakinin, which are responsible for appetite and sleep. The production of hormones increases just in times of loneliness.
The experiment confirmed the hypothesis of scientists that some social mechanisms work in Drosophila in the same way as in humans. In the future, it is planned to study the activity of proteins, neurons and genes of Drosophila. And, perhaps, this will create a drug for curing people from insomnia and overeating against a background of stress or loneliness.
