Scientists talk about the negative effects of alcohol on the brain
Drinking a lot of alcohol leads to inflammatory processes in the brain, which last more than a month after giving up alcohol, an international group of scientists with the participation of the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, Germany, found out, Rossiyskaya Gazeta writes.
As noted, the specialists observed 91 patients with alcohol dependence. They were interested in what happens to the brain in the first weeks of stopping alcohol and how long it takes to recover to its baseline values. At the same time, there were 36 people in the control group who did not suffer from alcohol dependence.
The subjects underwent an MRI scan. She showed the process of changing the microstructure of the white matter of the brain with withdrawal symptoms. According to scientists, even after six weeks of abstinence, degenerative changes were still observed, and even more than before the start of cancellation.
Experts believe this is due to an inflammatory response caused by excessive drinking. Therefore, researchers recommend practicing long periods of abstinence from alcohol, including those who drink little and rarely.
Earlier, Yana Furlet, an endocrinologist at the RZD-Medicine Central Clinical Hospital, said that with diabetes mellitus, alcohol intake is possible, but only on holidays. Drinks with a minimum sugar content are preferred.
