Scientists talk about the long-term effects of chronic sleep deprivation
Polish scientists decided to check how long the body recovers after lack of sleep. The article was published in PLOS ONE .
The entire body suffers from lack of sleep. Cognitive skills, attention, memory decrease, problems with the cardiovascular and nervous systems appear.
Researchers at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow decided to find out how long it takes to recuperate from sleep deprivation. Volunteers restricted themselves to sleep for 10 days, and then slept without restrictions for a week.
It turned out that after seven days of recovery, only the reaction rate returned to normal, all other parameters – behavioral, motor, neurophysiological – were far from normal.
Now the researchers intend to establish the exact time required for recovery.
Previously, scientists talked about the effect of sleep on life expectancy. A group of scientists from the Federal University of São Paulo compared the sleep patterns of centenarians and young people.
