Scientists say risk of dementia due to coronavirus

American scientists from the Cleveland Clinic have discovered a mechanism by which coronavirus infection can have long-term effects on brain function. This was reported on the website of the medical center.

The researchers used artificial intelligence to study data from patients with Alzheimer's disease and COVID-19. The closeness of genes and proteins of patients with SARS-CoV-2 and carriers of a number of other neurological diseases was measured. The genetic factors that allowed the coronavirus to infect brain tissues and cells were also studied.

In the course of the study, scientists were able to find ways “by which COVID-19 can lead to dementia, similar to Alzheimer's.” Experts have studied the potential associations between COVID-19 and neuroinflammation, as well as damage to the microvessels in the brain, which are hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease. As a result, it was found that the SARS-CoV-2 infection significantly changed the markers of Alzheimer's disease involved in brain inflammation.

Earlier it became known that headaches in the morning may indicate the onset of the development of a brain tumor. However, this is not the only symptom that indicates a disease, said Anton Zaitsev, head of the neurosurgical department of the Moscow Cancer Research Institute.
