Researchers in the United States developed a neuroprosthesis that was able to convert the brain waves of a paralyzed person into phrases. So the scientists managed to establish contact with the patient.
The researchers say this is an important technological milestone. The device can “give voice” to people who are unable to speak themselves.
The study involved a 36-year-old man who suffered a stroke when he was 20 years old. Because of this, he developed anarthria – he could no longer speak clearly. At the same time, he retained his cognitive functions.
First, the scientists created a basic vocabulary of 50 patient words. This was possible due to the fact that the patient could use the muscles for communication. Then an electrode was implanted into his brain. Over the next few months, researchers recorded the man's neural activity as he tried to pronounce the 50 words. An artificial intelligence algorithm was used in the processing of the obtained data.
As a result, the system was able to decode up to 18 words per minute with an average accuracy of 75%. Scientists were able to communicate with a man.
