Scientists of the Russian Geographical Society will go to look for traces of the Battle on the Ice
Representatives of the Center for Underwater Research of the Russian Geographical Society (CPI RGS) are planning to go on an expedition to Lake Peipsi. The main goal is to search for traces of the Battle of the Ice in 1242, TASS reports.
At first, scientists tried to determine the exact place where the battle took place between the troops of Prince Alexander Nevsky and the Livonian Order. For several centuries, the area has changed significantly. For a successful search, it was necessary to understand what the lake might have looked like almost 800 years ago, and to find a certain “starting point”.
The Executive Director of the Center, Sergei Fokin, noted that the research will be carried out using the magnetometry method. Sonar search is also used, and diving operations are planned to survey underwater structures.
The chronicles say that the battle took place on the eastern shore of the lake, near the Uzmen tract, at the Crow Stone. The stone was found during the expedition of Georgy Karaev in 1958. It is an object that has the shape of a bird. Scientists noted that they now have more advanced equipment than 50-60 years ago, and can get more information during the expedition.
Earlier it was reported that the remains of a flooded church were found at the bottom of Lake Peipsi. It was dated back to the 1450s.
