Scientists have warned of the possibility of an eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka

After a long silence in Kamchatka, the activity of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka has sharply increased, according to the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to an employee of the Klyuchevskoy volcano station, Yuri Demyanchuk, the activity of the volcano increased after the earthquake that occurred on July 29 in the region of the Alaska Peninsula with a magnitude of 8.2.

“The lava obelisk, which has been forming in the volcano's crater since the beginning of this year, has collapsed, and magmatic material is being squeezed out in its place. Ash emissions occur, incandescent avalanches move along the slopes, ”the RIA Novosti expert was quoted as saying.

Demyanchuk noted that it is currently extremely dangerous in the Shiveluch region. The scientist added that it is impossible to escape from the pyroclastic flow, the temperature inside the flow can reach 800 degrees. In addition, it is difficult to predict when and in which direction the flow will go.

As stressed at the institute, the destruction of the lava dome may occur.

Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. It has three main structures: the Old Shiveluch volcano, the ancient caldera and the active Young Shiveluch volcano. The height of the lava dome of Young Shiveluch is 2500 meters. The volcano is located 50 kilometers from the village of Klyuchi and 450 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Earlier it was reported that the southeastern crater of Mount Etna grew after six months of activity. The volcano, which was previously the highest operating in Europe, reached a record height of 3357 meters above sea level.
