Scientists have warned of the emergence of a “descendant” of the Indian strain of coronavirus. According to Jeffrey Barrett of the Senger Institute in Cambridge and François Ballou of University College London, variant AY.4.2 was only recently discovered by virologists, but accounts for almost 10% of infections in the UK.
According to the Financial Times, the strain was discovered while tracking the genetic evolution of the delta. The new mutation is 10-15% more infectious than its predecessor, which still dominates the world. If the preliminary information turns out to be correct, then AY.4.2 will become the most infectious version of the coronavirus during the pandemic.
Recall that the most common strain of SARS-CoV-2 in the world is now “delta” – it accounts for most of the new cases of COVID-19. Earlier, the WHO noted that the mutation will dominate the planet in the coming months until a more competitive strain of coronavirus emerges.
Earlier, the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that the coronavirus mutates to spread more efficiently and quickly through the air. Scientists compared alpha and delta variants with previous strains of SARS-CoV-2 and concluded that the virus evolves and adapts for better airborne transmission.
