The rise in temperature on Earth is the most serious health challenge for people around the world. This, as reported by RIA Novosti, said health professionals in a petition to the heads of state who will take part in the conference on climate change (COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland. The petition is posted on Phys.org.
Scientists have warned that the negative effect of an increase in global temperature will be larger than the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic. Air pollution from burning fossil fuels leads to the premature death of more than 7 million people every year. The situation is aggravated by poor quality water, food, polluted air and natural disasters.
Doctors are calling for human health to be the main topic of discussion at the conference and have proposed a number of measures that, in their opinion, can help prevent a disaster in the health sector.
Scientists believe it is necessary to start a rapid transition from fossil fuels and channel funding for the development of clean energy. They also insist on cutting greenhouse gas emissions by advanced nations in line with the requirements of the Paris Agreement, and urge them to help poorer countries meet these commitments. In addition, according to experts, world governments must build a “climate-resilient low-carbon health care system” and include measures to improve public health in the plan to combat climate change.
Earlier, a group of Canadian and British scientists conducted a study of climate change before 2500 and came to the conclusion that 50% of the territories in Africa, the Amazon region, the Arabian Peninsula, Southeast Asia and northern Australia will become uninhabitable.
