American scientists told where the asteroid came from, which is considered to be the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs. From this object remained a large crater on the Yucatan Peninsula.
The catastrophe happened about 66 million years ago. The diameter of the asteroid, according to calculations, was 9.6 kilometers. Scientists from Arizona State University and the Colorado Southwestern Research Institute have suggested that this asteroid could have arrived from the far part of the main asteroid belt of the solar system. It is located between Mars and Jupiter.
The researchers also reported that the asteroid was dark. This is the name for objects that reflect little light and then appear black.
Scientists came to these conclusions, in fact, after studying the crater in the Yucatan. They performed geochemical analysis to find out the class of the asteroid.
