The scientific journal Nature Ecology & Evolution shared the results of a study by scientists, in which the cause of the extinction of mammoths was established.
Scientists from Finland, Great Britain and Spain took part in the corresponding study. Experts have found that representatives of this genus of mammals died out not because of primitive people, as was previously believed, but because of climatic changes.
As part of the study, it turned out that mastodons and mammoths began to die at the end of the last ice age, which preceded the beginning of a gradual global decline in the number of elephants. Thus, the changes that caused the complete extinction of this species continued for millions of years.
“ We did not foresee such a result. It appears that the broad global picture of proboscis extinction in recent geological history can be reproduced without considering the impact of early human diasporas , ”said Dr. Zhang Hanwen, Research Fellow at the University of Bristol's School of Earth Sciences.
