Columbia University researchers have confirmed that hair can lose color due to stress. Fortunately, they sometimes recover.
To explore their hypothesis, the scientists conducted a study on volunteers. They studied the lifestyle of people and the dynamics of the condition of their hair. The researchers used a high-resolution scanner to study everything at the micro level.
As it turned out, under stress, the human hair follicle changes the composition of hundreds of proteins in the produced hair. This can cause the hair to turn gray. The researchers hypothesized that these changes are triggered by the mitochondria in the hair follicles. The fact is that mitochondria can pick up so-called stress markers.
Hair loss of color can be a reversible process. But it depends on the age and the duration of the stress.
