Scientists have noticed fights between octopuses using objects

Scientists from the University of Sydney studied video recordings of the life of octopuses and found them to have a peculiarity in interaction. Molluscs can use objects to express dissatisfaction with congeners. Females use this method more often, according to an article on the New Scientist portal.

The videos of the life of the octopuses living on the sandy seabed in Jervis Bay, dubbed “Octopolis”, were made for scientific purposes. In this place, mollusks can make burrows, so this small area is home to a large population of marine animals. When watching the video, experts noticed that octopuses often throw various objects with the help of jets of water, which they shoot with their own body.

Octopuses resort to such throwing when throwing out the remains of food and excavating a burrow. But it was also revealed that with the help of various objects, these sea animals show hostility. Scientists noted that females often resort to throwing objects, mainly in this way they fight off annoying males.

For example, one female threw silt at a male who tried to mate with her ten times. He tried to dodge the shells, but five times they flew to the target. And on one of the recordings, an octopus threw a shell at another, holding it with its tentacles.

Recall that in the fall of 2020, scientists found that octopuses are able to taste prey with the help of tentacles. And in March this year, Brazilian experts said that these animals are dreaming.
