Specialists of the Helix laboratory service and the Kirov Military Medical Academy have found out which groups of patients have the highest number of antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

From August last year to May 2021, 1.5 thousand people aged 18 to 89 years old who had had coronavirus with varying severity took part in the study. Experts were interested in how soon and until what moment after the illness the body produces specific IgG antibodies to the spike protein of the causative agent of COVID-19.

The results of the study were announced in the press service of the laboratory on August 8. It turned out that the average amount of antibodies produced was twice as high in patients 60-70 years old than in the age group 20-30 years old. At the same time, those who have undergone severe coronavirus produce more antibodies.

Dmitry Denisov, medical director of the Helix laboratory service, emphasized that the higher concentration of antibodies in the older generation can be explained by the “experience” of their organisms.

“Potentially, this can be explained by the fact that their immune system has encountered a large number of antigens throughout their lives and responds better to immunization,” Denisov explained.

Also, scientists were able to track the dynamics of the formation of antibodies in men and women. It turned out that in males, the amount of IgG antibodies reaches a peak on the 45th day after infection and remains at this level for about two more weeks. In women, the concentration of IgG can increase up to six months.

Earlier, the results of a sociological survey showed the attitude of Petersburgers and Muscovites to compulsory PCR testing. Approximately every third resident of both capitals reacted positively to the initiative.
