It is believed that mammoths disappeared from the face of the Earth due to the fact that they were killed by ancient people. Now scientists say there was a different cause for the extinction of this and other animal species.
The researchers examined 535 samples of loose permafrost and lake sediments from the Arctic. DNA was isolated from them and found out to which organisms it belonged.
The analysis showed that gradually the Earth began to lose the mammoth steppe adapted to the cold dry climate. Also, scientists saw what kind of animals lived in this region at the same time. DNA from reindeer, hares and voles was often found in the same areas as mammoths and horses. But the DNA of people there was rare. Scientists have come to the conclusion that ancient people hardly followed herds of mammoths and other animals and exterminated them.
The researchers said that moisture could be the main reason for the extinction of large animals. That is, the mammoths were killed by climate change.
