American scientists predicted the consequences of regional nuclear conflicts and world war. According to them, the consequences will be worse than previously thought.
Experts from Rutgers University, the National Center for Atmospheric Research and other scientific centers in the United States predicted using a modern climate model what the consequences of local conflicts or a world war with the use of nuclear weapons might actually be. According to them, the use of nuclear weapons will not only lead to the death of millions of people, but will also cause catastrophic climate change.
Nuclear strikes will trigger previously predicted global fires and soot emissions, leading to a “nuclear winter.” But, in addition, the ozone layer will be destroyed for a long time, which will lead to “several years of extremely strong ultraviolet radiation.”
Scientists have predicted approximate scenarios for the development of events. For example, if we consider the nuclear conflict between India and Pakistan, then as a result of the explosions, 5 megatons of soot will be formed, and the intensity of ultraviolet radiation will increase during the year. If it is a conflict between the United States and Russia, 150 megatons of soot will be formed, and the intensity of ultraviolet radiation will increase in eight years, when the “nuclear winter” dissipates. That is, one disaster will replace another.
But in the event of a world nuclear war, everything will be even worse than previously said. So, according to American scientists, due to the global nuclear war and the subsequent heating of the stratosphere and many other factors, there will be a significant reduction in the ozone layer by 15 years. Peak losses will be 5% globally and 65% in tropical regions. In the event of a regional nuclear war, the ozone content will be reduced by 25%, and recovery will occur within 12 years.
But in addition to environmental problems, a terrible blow to human health will be dealt due to mutations in DNA. In this regard, scientists predict an increase in the incidence of cancer and cataracts. It will also lead to problems in agriculture and, as a result, to a reduction in food and hunger.
