Scientists from the University of Basel made a discovery in the field of anatomy and discovered a new section of the masseter muscle. Researchers have commented on ScienceDaily.
According to Dr. Sylvia Mesey, the part of the masseter muscle that they opened differs from other layers in its location and function. It stabilizes the lower jaw and can pull it back towards the ear. Researchers led by Mesei and Professor Jens Christoph Thürp studied 12 formalin-dipped heads of deceased people who donated bodies to science. They also analyzed computed tomography scans of 16 more bodies and MRI data of one living person.
The new layer is called Musculus masseter pars coronidea (coronoid part of the masseter muscle), as it attaches to the coronoid process of the lower jaw. It was believed that the masseter muscle consists of two parts: superficial and deep, but many scientists doubted this theory due to contradictions. “It is known that literally everything in human anatomy has been studied over the past hundred years. And the more surprising is our discovery, because it is comparable in scale to the discovery of a new species of vertebrates by zoologists, “said Professor Tyurp.
Earlier, scientists from Wayne State University in Detroit and Vanderbilt University Medical Center discovered genes in the body responsible for stuttering. It also turned out that genes that regulate the production of sex hormones and a gene previously associated with autism were associated with this ailment.
