Scientists have learned to predict mass protests based on messages on social networks

by alex

Scientists have invented a tool that studies billions of Twitter posts since 2008. He can predict political events, including mass protests, and even new diseases.

The tool is called Storywrangler. It runs on the UVM supercomputer. Scientists say it shows the world's major themes as they arise. Of course, Twitter does not represent the entire population, but this social network is used by many people around the world.

Scientists have demonstrated how the tool can be used to predict political and financial disasters. Specifically, the researchers focused on three events: the assassination of Soleimani, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Black Lives Matter protests. All these events provoked heated discussions, by which it was possible to track the dynamics of their development.
