Scientists have figured out what is the mechanism of sexual desire in the brain. It is closely related to dopamine production.
Researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center described the work of sex-related signaling pathways and neurons that release dopamine. Previously, science already knew that dopamine acts on the areas of the brain associated with mating. But the exact neural source of this remained unknown.
“A fleeting meeting with a female arouses interest in mating in the male for tens of minutes, while a single successful mating gives rise to a feeling of satiety, which lasts for several days,” said one of the authors of the work.
Scientists conducted an experiment with mice. They were stimulated to release dopamine neurons in various areas of the brain. The researchers saw that interest in mating and sexual satiation were controlled by specialized anteroventral and preoptic periventricular dopamine neurons in the hypothalamus.
This study will help reduce the sexual side effects of antidepressants and other drugs.
