Scientists have learned about the uneven growth of the Earth's core

by alex

Scientists believe that the Earth's inner core is slowly growing – by a millimeter every year. This happens due to the fact that parts of the liquid outer core at the border with the inner one are cooled and solidified. As it turned out, this process is uneven. Under some parts of the world, the nucleus grows faster.

Scientists have found that the eastern half of the core under the Indonesian Banda Sea accumulates 60% more particulate matter than the other half under Brazil.

It is worth noting that although the Earth is more than 4 billion years old, its inner core is younger – geologists believe that it was formed from half a billion to 1.5 billion years ago. The team of researchers has simulated the growth of the inner core on a computer over the past billion years. The build-up of core mass probably became uneven almost immediately. Scientists speculate that this could alter the strength of the Earth's magnetic field.
