Moscow. June 8. INTERFAX.RU – Australian scientists have classified a new species of dinosaur, identifying it as the largest found on the continent. It is reported by BBC News.
The remains were discovered in 2007, after which paleontologists compared them with the bones of previously found species to determine their belonging. Difficulties were caused by the distant location of the fragments of the bones, as well as their condition.
The new species was named Australotitan cooperensis, or “southern titanium”. The dinosaur belonged to the sauropod species, that is, herbivorous.
In terms of its size, it is one of the 15 largest reptile fossils – its height reached 6.5 meters, and its length – 30 meters (roughly like a basketball court).
Sauropods lived in the Cretaceous period, about 92-96 million years ago.
