Scientists have found the cause of severe COVID-19 in patients
Scientists from ten countries conducted a large-scale study, during which the cause of the severe course of coronavirus in patients was established. This is stated in an article in Nature Communications.
It turned out that people who have previously been diagnosed with lung disease are more susceptible to the virus attack. Dangerous diagnoses include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, progressive scarring and hardening of the lung tissue.
In these patients, the coronavirus quickly enters the cells, triggering a severe immune response. The lungs quickly fill with fluid, and a ventilator is indispensable.
Earlier it became known that hot weather worsens the course of the coronavirus. According to the head physician of the Kommunarka hospital, this is especially true for elderly patients.
