American scientists talked about a way to “revitalize” old batteries by activating lithium. The study was published in the scientific journal Nature.

Experts from the National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), Department of Energy and Stanford University have found ways to improve old batteries and extend the life of lithium-ion batteries. Potentially, this invention will increase the autonomy of batteries and extend their life.

The scientific paper says that as batteries age, fragments of so-called dead lithium accumulate in batteries. Lithium ions become inactive, which shortens the battery life in smartphones, electric vehicles and other equipment. With the help of a special charging method, inactive fragments can be shifted by stimulating the movement of lithium ions towards the anode.

“It's like a very slow worm that propels its head forward and retracts its tail to move nanometer by nanometer,” Stanford University and SLAC professor Yi Cui described the behavior of an inactive lithium ion. As a result, the specialists managed to organize the charging of the old battery in such a way that its life increased by 30 percent.

“Our results are essential for the design and development of more reliable lithium metal batteries,” said study author Fang Liu. According to him, in the future, it is possible to achieve the creation of more efficient batteries designed for a long service life.

In mid-December, experts from IBM and Samsung described the prospect of achieving a weekly smartphone autonomy. The breakthrough took place thanks to the vertical arrangement of transistors in the chips instead of the usual horizontal one.
