Scientists have found a mechanism of protection against a cytokine storm in pregnant women – Izvestia

An international group of scientists said that a mechanism of protection against a cytokine storm was found in pregnant women, the Izvestia newspaper writes.

According to the study, the characteristics of the immune system of pregnant women protect them from a cytokine storm in the event of infection with COVID-19. To make this conclusion, the experts analyzed the blood composition of pregnant women infected with the coronavirus.

It is reported that scientists received information about the concentration in their plasma of 62 types of cytokines.

It turned out that infected pregnant women have a different level of anti-inflammatory cytokines, a lower level of interleukin-6, and an increased level of neutrophils – cells that fight harmful microorganisms.

The experts noted that in the absence of risk factors such as diabetes or hypertension, infection with COVID-19 should not cause complications in the expectant mother.

Earlier, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation reported that vaccination against coronavirus does not affect pregnancy and the fetus. The department stressed that the optimal period for vaccination of pregnant women is after 22 weeks.

To date, pregnant women in Russia are allowed to be vaccinated with the Sputnik V vaccine.
