Scientists have discovered the effect of coronavirus on potency

Scientists from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have uncovered the effect of COVID-19 on potency. The results of the study showed that the coronavirus persists in the tissues of the penis for a long time after recovery, which can lead to erectile dysfunction. This was reported in the World Journal of Men's Health.

It is noted that one of the consequences of coronavirus infection is endothelial dysfunction. In this condition, the mucous membrane of small blood vessels is disturbed, and the tissues fed by them cease to be normally supplied with blood and lose their functions. According to a study, such dysfunction of blood vessels can lead to the development of impotence in men who have recovered from COVID-19.

The study involved two men who had had coronavirus: one was hospitalized, and the other had only mild symptoms. Scientists collected samples of penile tissue from them and from a couple of men who were not infected with COVID-19 and analyzed all samples. It turned out that the coronavirus was present in the tissues of the penis of both patients. These same patients had all the signs of endothelial disruption. Healthy men from the control group did not have either one or the other.

“Men who develop COVID-19 infection should be aware that erectile dysfunction can be an adverse effect of the virus and should see a doctor if they develop symptoms,” said University of Miami associate professor and director of the Miller School's reproductive urology program. Ranjit

Ramasami.

Earlier, the head of the Laboratory of Genomic Engineering Pavel Volochkov warned that the coronavirus could threaten with impotence, since the infection affects almost all organs and tissues of the body. According to him, the degree of damage depends on how effectively the immune system works. However, destroying the virus, the immune system can also infect the tissues of various glands that are involved in the production of sex hormones.
