Scientists have discovered an unusual effect of intermittent fasting

Scientists in the United States have shown that intermittent fasting changes the composition of bacteria in the gut and also lowers blood pressure, writes the journal Circulation Research.

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston wanted to know if gut microbiota could regulate blood pressure. They conducted an experiment with rats. The animals were fed every other day, as a result of which they changed the composition of bacteria in the intestines, as well as decreased pressure.

“Previous work in our laboratory has shown that the composition of the gut microbiota in spontaneously hypertensive rats prone to stroke is different from the microbiota of animals with normal blood pressure,” the experts said.

The scientists added that their discovery will help develop new methods of dealing with hypertension based on dietary adjustments.

Earlier, American scientists announced the benefits of intermittent fasting for the body: such a diet helps to improve human cognitive abilities and increases life expectancy.
