Scientists have discovered an unexpected property of lightning
A group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania (USA) studied lightning and came to unexpected conclusions. The scientific article was published in the journal Science.
During the discharge, a huge amount of oxidant molecules is released, which, among other things, cleanse the atmosphere from pollution. This process triggers the combination of nitric oxide, hydroxyl radical and hydroperoxyl radical.
Scientists have calculated that about 16% of such natural filters for cleaning the atmosphere are formed precisely due to lightning. To make the necessary calculations, the researchers used a NASA DC-8 aircraft.
