Scientists from India have described a new type of edible onion, Allium negianum. It grows in a valley on the border with Nepal.
Briefly about the discovery of the researchers writes “Lenta.ru”. Scientists have discovered onions in the Niti Valley in the northeastern Indian state of Uttarakhand. It grows at an altitude of 3 to 4.8 thousand meters. It can be found mainly in open meadows, sandy soils, along rivers and mountain streams. The new species is closest to the Przewalski's onion, which grows in the Himalayas.
Curiously, the locals found this bow before scientists. It is considered one of the best in the local market.
Researchers now fear that people will be tempted to try new onions and thereby endanger the ecosystem.
