Scientists have called a decrease in height a sign of imminent death in women
Scientists from the universities of Gothenburg (Sweden) and Copenhagen (Denmark) have named a sign of imminent death in women. According to experts, this is a decrease in growth. They came to such conclusions after the study, the results of which were published in the BMJ Open .
Experts observed 2,406 women from both countries who were born between 1908 and 1952. Women were measured twice for height. The first was when they were between 30 and 60 years old. The second – after 10-13 years. On average, during this period, their growth decreased by 0.8 centimeters. At the same time, for some, it did not change at all, while others lost up to 14 centimeters. Over the next 19 years, experts studied the causes of death of the observed. Over the years, 625 women have died. In 157 of them, cardiovascular diseases became the cause of death, including strokes in 37.
It turned out that every centimeter of lost height increased the risk of death by 14% -21%. If women lost more than two centimeters in height, then these indicators rose to 80%. Scientists concluded that a serious decrease in growth meant an almost twofold increase in the risk of death from the aforementioned diseases.
The authors of the study noted that after age 50, many people grow less tall. This process is especially accelerated by the age of 70. The main reasons are flattening of the spinal discs, curvature of posture. And now new research has shown that a decrease in height may indicate an increased risk of early death. Scientists urged to closely monitor these indicators, pay close attention if they begin to decrease. This will help identify the risk of developing and exacerbating diseases and take the necessary measures.
Earlier, the cardiologist named the non-obvious harbingers of a heart attack. According to Vladimir Glagolev, this is not always a tingling sensation in the chest. With a heart attack, pain is possible in the neck, arm (mainly left), abdomen, lower back, ear and even teeth. Such symptoms appear in 30% of cases.
