Cloud to Street specialists provided the results of observations, according to which, since the beginning of the 21st century, the number of people affected by floods has increased by 24%. This is ten times more than the predictions made, writes the journal Nature. The study was carried out using satellite observations.

“Vulnerable populations often have no choice but to settle in floodplains,” the scientists explained.

Experts recorded data from 2000 to 2018. During this time, 2.23 million square kilometers of territories were flooded due to floods, as a result of which from 255 to 290 million people were affected.

Nearly 90% of floods occurred in South and Southeast Asia, southern Latin America, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa. According to Cloud to Street, the floods will affect the populations of 25 new countries by 2030.

Recall, as kp.ru wrote earlier, 2021 was marked by massive fires and floods in dozens of countries. Thus, severe floods affected the southern part of Russia, Europe and China. Hundreds of fire centers have been recorded in Russia, Turkey and Canada.
