Scientists from the United States and Wuhan, shortly before the start of the coronavirus pandemic, applied for a grant to grow new coronaviruses.
As reported by The Telegraph, referring to previously “merged” grant applications submitted to the US Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Directorate, an international team of scientists intended to mix the genetic data of related strains to grow completely new viruses from fragments of genome sequences from similar coronaviruses.
As noted, the grant application was submitted by the president of the non-profit organization EcoHealth Alliance Peter Dassak. He made it on behalf of a consortium that included his NGO, the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the University of North Carolina and the Singapore College of Medicine.
At the same time, it is clarified that the applications for the 2018 grant have not been approved.
