The results of the study showed that patients with COVID-19 requiring hospitalization have significantly higher levels of autoimmune antibodies than those with mild disease.

The researchers noted that after the transferred coronavirus, the amount of IgG antibodies in the blood of patients increases; instead of the virus proteins, these antibodies “storm” the person's own immune system. In the course of the study, the growth of such antibodies was observed in 20% of patients.

“As a result, these antibodies suppress the ability of cytokines to bind to the corresponding receptors that block viral replication. The latter gets the opportunity to multiply unhindered, and the immune system, feverishly producing more and more cytokines, chokes on its own antibodies. In clinical terms, this leads to the emergence of the so-called cytokine storm “

Such a “struggle” of the body can lead to the development of diseases of the autoimmune spectrum. Note that autoantibodies are antibodies directed to one's own tissues or to substances secreted by immune cells into the blood, that is, antigens of the human body. They usually form in autoimmune diseases.
