Scientist Neil Ferguson spoke about the dangers of a new coronavirus mutation for children. A professor at Imperial College London told The Independent.
According to him, the proportion of cases of infection of children with a new strain is much higher than that of the already known variant of the disease. The researcher noted that data on the spread of the recently discovered mutation in the southeast of the UK confirms a high infection rate among people under 15 years of age.
Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) assessed the danger of a new mutation of the coronavirus. Michael Ryan, director of the WHO's health emergencies program, said there was no evidence at this time that the new strain would in any way increase the severity of the disease.
A dangerous mutation of the coronavirus was discovered in September in the UK. To date, about a thousand cases of infection with the new strain have been identified. The mutation has also been identified in patients in Denmark, the Netherlands, South Africa. The British Advisory Board on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats said this variant of the coronavirus is spreading faster.
