The omicron coronavirus strain is probably the latest mutation of COVID-19 – the wave of infections may subside by February 20. Such a timeline for the end of the pandemic, referring to a mathematical model, predicted a professor at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki Demosthenes Sariyannis to Newsbeast.
The scientist believes that, for example, in Greece, the upward trend of infections will continue until January 20-22. Accordingly, a month after the peak of the wave, its decline will end. “Then we will have the end of the omicron, and most of our society will have immunity,” the expert explained.
At the same time, Sariyannis warned that even if this variant turns out to be the last mutation of the virus, the logic of complacency should not prevail among people, saying that we will all easily get sick and end [the pandemic].
On December 23 last year, virologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Felix Ershov called the omicron strain a possible signal for the end of the pandemic. He noted that this variant of the coronavirus is extremely contagious, but “not deadly,” and the antibodies obtained with its help “will help both vaccines and the immunity of those who have been ill.”
