School “gold”. What awaits the winners of international Olympiads
Head of the Center for Pedagogical Excellence in Moscow, Ivan Yashchenko, on what changes have taken place in the training system in recent years and what benefits await the winners of international Olympiads.
Right now, not only gymnasts and epee players, but also young physicists, mathematicians, and biologists bring gold to the Russian treasury. The season of international Olympiads for schoolchildren is in full swing: students from Moscow have received 11 medals, eight of which are of the highest dignity.
Physics and math are cool
Ekaterina Bychkova, AiF.ru: International Olympiads in four subjects have already passed, how do you assess the results?
Ivan Yashchenko: Of course, this year was very difficult, and it is clear that the Olympiads are held in an online format that is far from ideal. But they pass, and this is important for the children: many of them will not have a second chance – they graduate from school. Competition in competitions is high, interest in science is growing all over the world, this is especially noticeable in the countries of Southeast Asia, in the United States, and it is nice that Russia also takes very worthy places in the Olympiads. I remember how a few years ago our math team did not make it into the top ten. Now we have the second place in this subject for the second year in a row, and for the second year in a row all members of our physics team receive “gold”. Today everyone is passionate about the Tokyo Olympics. And here you can see an analogy: professional athletes by their example show how useful mass sports are, and the successes of our children in physics, mathematics, computer science stimulate others to take up these subjects.
– How do you explain our “breakthrough” in mathematics and physics in recent years?
Why are there more Muscovites
– This year the competitions are also held in a distance form. It would seem that there are advantages here: no acclimatization, familiar conditions. Do you think this format is still a plus or a minus?
