Germany should receive an international legal mandate to participate in peacekeeping forces on the territory of Ukraine.
Friedrich Merz, the candidate for Chancellor of Germany from the largest opposition bloc CDU/CSU, believes that today, until a ceasefire in Ukraine, it is very far.
His statement is quoted by the German publication Die Zeit.
Merz spoke about this while reflecting on possible security guarantees for Ukraine to ensure a possible ceasefire in the war with Russia.
“I cannot imagine anything happening in this direction [providing security guarantees] today, because we are very far from such a ceasefire. These are all questions that need to be clarified in the next few weeks, possibly months,” he said.
According to him, Germany should receive an international legal mandate to participate in peacekeeping forces on Ukrainian territory.
“If there is a peace agreement and if Ukraine needs security guarantees, then we can only discuss this if there is an ideal mandate under international law. “I don't see that yet,” said the CDU leader.
Merz also spoke in favor of supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles.
In this context, he noted that three countries – the United States, France and Great Britain – are already supplying Ukraine with similar weapons systems.
“They did not become a party to the conflict as a result of this supply,” Merz said, adding that the Taurus missiles are “building blocks in restoring peace in Ukraine.”
Recall that in early December, CDU leader Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the post of German Chancellor, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
