The plane of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz crossed the North Pole on its return from Japan. Thus, the government airliner bypassed the airspace of Russia.
This is reported by Spiegel.
From Tokyo to Berlin, the government plane of the German Chancellor flew longer than usual. The flight lasted more than 13 hours – about 1 hour 20 minutes longer than the direct route, which passes through China and Russia.
Scholz took off from the Japanese airport on an Airbus A350, first north through Alaska, then turned west, flew over the Arctic Ocean and reached Germany through Finland.
On the way to Japan, Scholz also flew over the territory of the Russian Federation, but in a different way – through Poland, Romania, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and China. This journey took 13 hours.
A pilot of a government aircraft noted in a comment that flying over the North Pole is a rare event even for experienced pilots.
Recall, at the beginning of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24 Russia has informed civil aviation that it is closing almost all airspace near the border with Ukraine.
