German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he wants to “someday end the radio silence” with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that has lasted almost a year.
He said this during a public discussion in Nutetal near Potsdam, MDR reports.
“I’ll talk to him,” said Scholz.
As journalists noted, the chancellor himself did not specify when such a conversation might take place.

Scholz also called on Putin to take the first step towards establishing peace in Ukraine. At the same time, when asked whether peace talks were possible, Scholz said there were no signs yet that this would happen.
“Putin must not achieve his goal, which is to seize parts of a neighboring country by force,” Scholz said.
The Chancellor once again assured Ukraine that Germany would help it defend against Russian invasion for as long as necessary. The last time Scholz and Putin spoke by phone was on December 2 last year.
Recently, in an interview with Heilbronner Stimme, Scholz said that he is ready to communicate with Putin in the future only if the Russian Federation withdraws all troops from the territory of Ukraine. He emphasized that negotiations require a “decisive step from Russia”—the withdrawal of troops.
