The German Chancellor noted that the European Union will not make any decisions regarding Ukraine without Kyiv's knowledge.
The majority of participants in the informal European Council, which met in Budapest, are ready to guarantee Ukraine the necessary support to defend itself from Russian aggression even if the United States stops or limits aid after coming to Belarus Donald Trump's house.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced this at a briefing, the transcript of which was published on the German government website.
“I don’t want to hide the fact that there are different positions. The opinions expressed by the Hungarian Prime Minister [Viktor Orban] on this matter do not coincide with those that I represent or those that many other friends in Europe represent, who very loyally say: it is a high priority to guarantee Ukraine the necessary support,” he emphasized.
The German Chancellor claims that European countries will have to help Ukraine to repel Russian aggression.
“I think this is very important. Ukraine was attacked. It decided to be a European state, a state that belongs to the European Union and its values of democracy and the rule of law. I think that if anything has become clear in this terrible war, it is that Ukraine is a European nation with a clear orientation towards Europe, the European Union and the goals and values that we have,” Scholz said.
At the same time, the German Chancellor noted that the European Union will not make any decisions regarding Ukraine without Kiev’s knowledge.
“There is one principle that almost everyone agrees on – nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. This is how it should be in the future. “Nothing can be agreed upon over Ukraine’s head,” he emphasized.
Olaf Scholz recalled that there is an agreement on a $50 billion credit line that the G7 countries are ready to provide to Ukraine.
“For the time that will soon be discussed, there are available means by which Ukraine can ensure its defense capability, regardless of the fiscal restrictions of individual countries or political events,” he emphasized.
At the same time, the German Chancellor considers it necessary for Europe to demonstrate its readiness to do even more than it has managed to do so far and to create the appropriate conditions for this.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supported India’s mediation for a political settlement in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
